Finger Lakes and Forest Toes - May 2-4, 2009
A multi-day, arduous, yet rewarding walking adventure along the Finger Lakes trail starting in Ithaca. We will climb up and over one of the highest ridges in the area finding respite at night at a primitive campsite and then at a 19th century estate on the shores of lesser-known lake of the region. We will walk from the Cayuga Lake watershed into the Seneca Lake watershed.  For those continuing on for the optional 4th day, we will wind up on the shores of Seneca Lake.

This is a journey of discovery by our own two feet over many enlightening and strenuous inches of sacred ground. Better acquaint yourself with trees, fungi, flowers and other interesting phenomena that have sprouted from the spring soil...including stories of the people who lived and walked here before us. Sample fine teas in the depths of a dark hemlock grove or on the edge of a sunlit ravine. Amidst the dancing mosses, savor poetry and participate in a place-oriented poetry workshop led by an award-winning local poet. Explore the concept of terroir as we sample both Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake wines. What about local cheese? And maple syrup? Eat well, sleep well and walk to arrive where only the movement of our legs will take us.

Gather together around a campfire at night for a traditional National Park Service-style campfire program. Gather together in the dark to practice orienting ourselves amidst the stars. Share our own diverse perspectives towards this place over hearty, home-cooked meals of place conscious foods. Walk and walk some more.

As Place Odyssey and the Art of Walking is a relatively new experiment and organized by only one little person, please have patience as the minute details of trips flesh themselves out in the months and weeks before the date of departure.  The more people who sign up early, the more details can be known in advance.  Every effort is made to create inspiring itineraries. Pleasant surprises that can't be known months in advance are part of the great adventure.  You'll notice that costs decrease with increasing numbers of participants (though groups are never huge)...so tell all of your friends about us too!
